I was going to write about the band of robbers known as the Gapos Gang because just early this morning suspected members tried to rob a Makati home and failed. Stupid as it may seem, they were unable to tie up the driver of the home tight enough, and he was able to escape and alert the police. The guy who tied him must be a newbie. Must’ve been embarrassing to be in the Gapos Gang and not be able to “gapos” your victim properly.
Anyway, researching about them led me to the 1989 Ronnie Ricketts movie also titled Gapos Gang on Imb. Before I knew it, I was led to the page of the Bioman imitation Biokids, and the Biokids spoof Kabayo Kids.
Haha. I seriously loved this when I was five:
My brothers and I used to play Kabayo kids, and I was Yellow Banana. (Kuya Mike was Orange Juice, and Kuya Mart was Green Mango, and of course out Tita Pie was always the villain.)
Does anybody else remember this? They were called Kabayo Kids because all of their jobs were related to horses. I think Tito Sotto was a coachman and Vic Sotto an equestrian. Forgot about Joey de Leon.
This movie has all the requirements of a good Pinoy film, It has:
1. A Song-and-Dance Sequence. Filipino movies have got to have this, usually at the beach. The main characters start singing to the tune of a foreign song with Tagalog lyrics and whaddya know, all the people in the whole place would sing and dance along. (I’m sorely reminded of Pik Pak Boom.) Kabayo Kids’ song-and-dance sequence was held in some place where there are many horses, and in my mind I see Vic Sotto riding a small rocking horse singing “We’re not the Bioman. We’re not the Biokids. We’re the horsey-horsey tigidig Kabayo Kids.”
2. Fight Sequence. Usually in an abandoned warehouse. Some girl is almost always kidnapped and kept in the warehouse with the usual goons you see film after film. The heroes come, and miraculously dodges all bullets and saves the girl. And always, ALWAYS, the girl joins in the fight and is able to hit a goon in the head with some piece of wood, and the goon sways dizzily and then falls. And before I forget, the police arrives after all the fighting.
3. Almost-Kissed-Scene. And so the fighting is over, the guy and the girl look at each other and is about to kiss, and then something happens. Some kid gets in the middle of them and interferes. The girl’s father appears and then says “Hoy, anong ginagawa mo sa anak ko?” Or some other distraction that leaves the guy and the girl just smiling happily, forgetting that seconds ago they were about to kiss.
But really now, I would give an arm and a leg to watch this again. I would probably die of its cornyness, but hey, sometimes corny is not so bad.

wow! classic! i think i watched almost all of the tito, vic and joey movies when i was little. and like what you said, the formula for a filipino comedy movie includes the usual hero saving the villain and dance number themes… but what i like was the tandem of joey de leon and rene requestas… i love them in starzan.. and my favorite.. elvis and james… naabutan mo pa ba ito kat? kabisado ko ata lahat ng kanta sa elvis and james… idol si papa rene! isa pa yung laging tatay ni vic sotto ay si panchito… o kaya uncle niya.. ang pangalan lagi eh “tiyo paeng”… astig!
