Gipie– (pronounced Ji-pai) This is my nickname at home, because when I was brought home from the hospital there was a present labelled “For Baby Gift” that my grandma misread “For Baby Gipie”. This name later evolved to Gie.

Si Gipie....

Si Gipie....

Kukay—Embarrassingly so, my brothers call me this up to this day. It’s a name derived from the Zenki character Apo Jukai.

Ana—Eveyone who knew me in grade school called me by my first name.

Anakat—Ana and Katrina put together, invented by my T.H.E. teacher Mrs. Mendoza. The name stuck, and all of my classmates and teachers in high school called me that.

Katrinang Basa–My Filipino teacher Bb.Lina called me this, for no apparent reason.

Assassin—My tropa code name, the Letter A in the acronym D’ Tracels. I gave this name to myself and my friends only call me this in writing, mostly in the class Freedom Chart. (It was a chart where you can write anything you want and bash off anybody.)

Jughead–It started when I wrote a skit for class where the main character was “Archie” and I played his girl bestfriend. Some guy classmates started calling me Jughead because of that, and also because they said I have a big head, literally. And I do—all store-bought head bands always feel tight. I always retaliated by saying that was because I was smart.

Juggernaut–My sophomore class (II-Anthurium) had an X-Men parody. One of us was called Professor Triple X because she was green-minded and a friend Julie was Julibee. Since I was already Jughead, it wasn’t too hard to think of an X-Men name for me.

Anakin–only my high school best friend Gail called me this. Star Wars then was a hit, and the Anakat became Anakin.

Mind—my first boyfriend called me this. I called him Mine because that was the “in” term of endearment then, but he called me Mind because he said I was smart, and it was totally unromantic.

Kat—My name Anakat was later on shortened to Kat in high school senior year.

Katkat–Closest friends in high school call me this.

Bes–Dexter, my college best friend called me this. It’s short for best friend, of course.

Katpusa–My The Perpetualite pals called me this, to avoid confusion since there were two other Kats in AB MassCom

Si Katpusa

Si Katpusa

ANNA–with double, N, yes. I was called ANNA in both Jollibee branches I worked in. Also in countless stores where I’m asked to give my name, I always say ANNA because if I say Kat, ninety percent of the time, the service crew would ask me what was my name again. And that’s not even an unusual name.

Mahal–by Ferdie. I used to call him Hampaslupa, while I was Kamahalan to him.One day he asked me thru text: “Kumain ka na, Kamahalan?” I replied, “Pwede mo nang tanggalin yung Ka at An sa kamahalan.”

Teacher Kat–I became Teacher Kat to all of my students since July 2006 to present. I love this name.

Kat-Teacher–Some of the younger ones still call me this, because in Korean they say the name first and then the title (Kat-sonsaengnim) and they still aren’t used to the correct way.

Teacher Kat-Katrina–my youngest student Da Hyeon calls me this. She’s like, the cutest!
