After the Storm

It was Christine Reyes who saved me.

As Typhoon Ondoy’s wrath hit my poor country I was actually nice and warm on my bed, reading a book I claim to hate, wallowing in my despair, oblivious of what was going on around me. All I thought about was me and my personal storm, while hundreds if not thousands were waddling through the floodwaters of the Philippines’ most devastating tropical depression since 1967. While houses and cars were being washed away and people were disappearing, I was too selfish to even reply to the messages of those people who cared enough to wonder if I was still alive. I already felt dead.

I had to get back to work the Monday after the storm and looking through the online news I saw that picture of Christine Reyes, the actress, on the roof of her house, all wet and cold. In the background I could see how high the muddy water was. That scene gave me an invisible but painful nudge—who was I to act like all the problems of the world belonged to me? I am no damsel in distress just like poor Ms. Reyes.

Move. That was what I had to do. Get off my over-reacting butt and move. So maybe one person doesn’t need me anymore, but boy, many others do.

Forty percent of the relief goods gathered by Tulong Kabataan was obtained by going house-to-house and asking for people's help.

Back to School

When Tulong Kabataan had a relief mission in Damka, Sta. Mesa (where the flood was 12 feet at its highest) this was the most heartbreaking sight for me:

Today many students returned to school after the Ondoy tragedy but many of them were not able to salvage their school things with the incredible speed the water level rose. Many more will go back to studying once their schools-turned-evacuation centers are cleared up. Let’s help these children and support the Tulong Kabataan Balik-Eskwela (Back-to-school) drive:

My Kat, it takes a celebrity to nudge you. Mabuti naman at nakapag “move on” ka na. At maigi that you channelled that dormant energy in helping our kababayan.

Oo nga! Ang arte ko kasi. May pa-depress-depress pang nalalaman!

I did some volunteer work in the past na naman. Pero ngayon talagang yung need andun and I couldn’t go around moping when I knew I could be somewhere else, and useful.

Whenever we have problems, we seem to be somehow egocentric. But once we try to look at the world, once we try to compare ourselves to other people, we’d realize that we’re still lucky.

It’s nice that you realized that the world is not going to adjust to our personal storms; Our personal storms has to adjust to the world around you.

You inspire me, Ate Kat. After I read your blog post, I realized that after all my problems with my acads (such as missing grades and me getting under pressure with requirements’ deadlines), I’m still lucky that I can still go to school, my things are fine and I still have a house to live in.

    Kumanta ka no? hehehe…

Actually, I planned on volunteering to some relief operations, hindi lang ako makaalis sa bahay. Siguro, pag dating ng one-week sembreak, i-invite ko ang mga classmates ko :D

Keep it up Ate Kat :)

    THUMBS UP for YOU! ;)

Tama ka! Ako I would always say na hindi ako yung taong pag may problema nagmumukmok pero ginawa ko rin ahaha! Tapos biglang, wake up call, hello, it’s not all about you! Doing volunteer work is hella tiring, but I’m sure you’ll love it.

glad to know you’re okay after that terrible disaster.

Sometimes we fail to realize that despite the woes we have in our lives, we are still much more fortunate than others. Hope that by helping the unfortunate, you find that much needed inspiration to move on with your life . As they say, behind the clouds the sun is still shining :)
